DIY Mosquito Repellant

There is nothing worse than having unwanted guests show up on your camping trip or weekend at the cottage, particularly when those guests are mosquitoes.

While every store carries conventional bug repellent and mosquito spray, you can also easily make your own in under 5 minutes.

Why Use Homemade or Natural Bug Repellant?

The main reason people choose to switch to a natural bug repellant is because the conventional brands contain a lot of potentially toxic chemicals and not everyone wants to spray them on their skin or inhale them inadvertently when applying. It should also be noted that residue from insect repellant applied outside, can be accidentally brought inside your home after application. Anecdotally, I once used conventional bug spray on my body while staining a bunkie and the spray caused the dry stain on my hands and arms to drip off – no need for turpentine that day! Avoid the deet and ward off unwanted insects with essential oils and other natural ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 40 drops sweet orange essential oil
  • 20 drops lemongrass essential oil
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 10 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 1 tbsp rubbing alcohol
  • ⅓ witch hazel
  • ½ cup water

Directions

Mix all of the ingredients together in a small spray bottle and shake before each use.

Get ready to repel mosquitoes and also smell great!
